Raphael Sandaltzopoulos

Professor, Democritus University of Thrace

Raphael Sandaltzopoulos is α Professor at the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics (MBG) and Vice Rector of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). He studied Biology (Aristotle University, Thessaloniki) and completed his PhD at EMBL (Heidelberg, 1996). As a post-doc fellow (EMBO, HFSPO) at the National Cancer Institute (NIH, USA) he focused on Epigenetics and Chromatin Dynamics (1996-1999).

He received an MBA degree (Keller’s Graduate School of Management, Virginia, 1999). He worked for 2 years as Senior Scientist in Biotech companies and joined MBG-DUTH in 2002. He was member of the Management Board of the Hellenic NARIC (2012-2015) and Scientific Expert of the Greek National Committee for the EU-FP7 (Food, Agriculture & Biotechnology, 2009-2010). His research interests include a) diagnostic/therapeutic biomarkers identification, b) biotechnological applications of genomics. He published >50 research articles in journals such as: Nature, Cell, Mol Cell, Genes Dev, PNAS USA, EMBO J, etc. (citations >4300) and participated in 11 research grants (total budget >2,5 M€).
