OMIC-Engine aspires to enhance Synthetic Biology efforts in Greece, with emphasis on the Agro-Food sector. The Research Infrastructure unites the research efforts in addressing a broad range of Synthetic Biology needs regarding scientific, technical and societal challenges.  In that way, OMIC-Engine will build a Synthetic Biology community across the country and will launch new data & technological infrastructures aiming to fulfil future industrial needs. In parallel, OMIC-Engine will develop educational and public engagement activities in order to spread the word of Synthetic Biology in the academic community and explore its societal impact.

OMIC-Engine will map existing activities in Synthetic Biology and, through consultation with leading researchers and stakeholders, will develop a strategic agenda to guide the emergence of this interdisciplinary field within Greece and neighbouring countries. The main goal is to highlight major opportunities and challenges for researchers, funding agencies, policy makers and stakeholders over the next five to ten years.

This inclusive approach is fundamental, since ultimate success of Synthetic Biology will depend not only on OMIC-Engine’s technological successes, but also its ability to develop products and services that are needed & accepted by the society and other stakeholders.
